札幌市清田区出身の西は、札幌Ｕ―１５、Ｕ―１８で育ち、２００６年に当時Ｊ２だったトップチームに昇格。２０１０年までの札幌（１０年はＪ１新潟へ期限付き移籍）から、Ｊ１鹿島（１１～１８年）、Ｊ１神戸（１９～２０年）、Ｊ１浦和（２１年）を経て、２２年に札幌に復帰。２３年８月に当時Ｊ３の岩手に加入した。
西は今季でプロ２０年目。Ｊ１通算試合数は３７２試合を数え、個人では２度のベストイレブン（１７、１８年）を獲得した。クラブでもリーグ戦、ルヴァン杯、天皇杯、アジア・チャンピオンズリーグの全てのタイトルを獲得し、通算優勝回数は８度に上る。
